On Friday night, the Longview Lobos hosted the Lufkin Panthers as they opened the 116th football season in Lobo history.

Despite falling down 14-0 early in the first quarter, the Lobos stormed back to dominate the Panthers 41-2 the rest of the contest to notch their 9th win in a row over their rivals to the South.

KING WILL COACH THROUGH CANCER DIAGNOSIS
August 25th, 2025

Longview Lobo head football coach and athletic director John King informed the Longview News-Journal on Monday he has been diagnosed with mouth cancer, but intends to continue his coaching duties until a procedure is done at some point in the near future.

"It's something hopefully they can cut out...no radiation," King said. "We're going to be proactive and do the procedure as soon as possible. Might be later this week, but the sooner the better."

LONGVIEW, PINE TREE, SPRING HILL SET FOR SCRIMMAEGS

With a little more than a week left to get ready for the games that count, Longview, Pine Tree and Spring Hill will hold their final dress rehearsals Thursday with scrimmages against quality opponents.

HEARTBREAK AGAIN: DRAGONS BOOT FIELD GOAL TO EDGE LOBOS, 20-17

Longview battled Southlake Carroll throughout Saturday's UIL 6A Division II state semifinal at SMU's Gerald J. Ford Stadium, but came up short after a running into the kicker penalty set up the Dragons' eventual game-winning field goal attempt and 20-17 win.
