ONE WEEK AWAY: LOBOS BATTLE TIGERS

The Longview Lobos continued a seven-year tradition of preparing for football season when they scrimmaged Texas High at Lobo Stadium on Thursday night, and received another important preseason test when they pulled out a 13-7 controlled portion scoring advantage against the Tigers and later remained competitive when they were outscored 14-7 in live action gameplay.

Longview and Texas High played 63 real football games between 1922 and 2015, but the UIL realignment disrupted that trend in 2016 when it sent them to different classifications. The two programs eventually found a way to resume their series in 2018 with the first of many competitive preseason scrimmage challenges that helped develop successful season-long game plans over the years.

Longview, Pine Tree and Spring Hill's football programs continue to push toward the 2024 regular season, and will participate in their final preseason tests this week.

Longview High School continued its storied history of sending football players to the collegiate level, and recognized its latest six signees Taylor Tatum, Tavion Morgan, Chase Smith, Anthony Monsivais, Xaryus Sheppard and Dakaylen Reese during a national signing day ceremony at its turf room on Wednesday afternoon.

Tatum shined enough as Longview's running back to set a Longview program record for most touchdowns in a career with 68, and also produced 1,463 rushing yards, 138 receiving yards, 31 passing yards, 20 rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown, and one passing touchdown as a senior in 2023.

LATE FIELD GOAL LIFTS TIGERS OVER LOBOS, 27-24

Longview battled Lancaster for the second time this year during Friday night's regional semifinal at Forney's City Bank Stadium, but it couldn't earn a second season series victory when its 14-point halftime lead slipped away in a 27-24 season-ending third round playoff defeat.

The Lobos played without 2024 Oklahoma running back commit Taylor Tatum (injury), and finished the 2023 high school football season with an 11-2 record, while the Tigers will bring an 8-5 mark to next week's Class 5A Division I Region II final against Forney.
