TYLER - Marcus Maxey's end zone interception to end the first half and Malcolm Kelly's 64-yard scoring reception on Longview's opening possession of the third quarter put away John Tyler with a 38-13 victory Friday night at Rose Stadium.
The win improved the fourth-ranked Lobos to 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in the District 11-5A race. John Tyler, meanwhile, falls to 1-4 and 0-1. John Tyler threatened to make a game of it in the second quarter after Longview built an early 21-0 lead. The Lions rallied by doing something that no other team has done to the Lobos this season - hold them to a scoreless quarter of play. A 64-yard completion from Lion quarterback Antoine Bush to DeBrennon Erskine advanced JT to the Lobo 19-yard line. After a 13-yard Bush-to-Erskine completion, the two connected again for a 6-yard scoring play with 2:04 left before halftime. An inspired Lion defense then stopped the Lobos, and JT got the ball back at its own 42. Again, Bush went to the air completing a 29-yard screen pass to Jullian Norman and connecting with Erskine for another 21 yards for first-and-goal at the Lobo 8. Norman ran for four yards, and on second and goal, the Lobos' James Pierce knocked down a pass to Erskine in the lefthand corner of the end zone. On third and goal, with one second left in the half, Maxey stepped in front of Bush's pass to Javan Cole as the scoreboard buzzer sounded. Longview scored on its first possession of the second half as Quincy Grant completed a 64-yard pass to Kelly as Longview extended its lead to 28-7. Grant also added a 64-yard scoring jaunt in the third quarter, and Ryan Howard kicked a 28-yard field goal in the final stanza as the Lobos pulled away. John Tyler added one more score on a Bush-to-Erskine pass late in the fourth quarter. Bush threw for 205 yards on 14 of 30 passing. Jerrel Williams scored twice in the first quarter finishing the game with 108 yards rushing on 12 carries. He scored the game's first points with just 47 seconds elapsed after the Lions fumbled on their first play from scrimmage. Williams scored on a 9-yard run. He added a 57-yard scoring run at the 1:52 mark of the opening quarter. Chris Jones also scored on a 42-yard run up the middle as time expired in the opening frame. Howard added all three successful extra point attempts. Grant was 6 of 13 passing for 156 yards and ran for 83 on 7 carries. Jones added 79 yards on the ground on 6 carries. Longview returns home for only the second time this season next Friday as the Lobos play host to Tyler Lee for Homecoming 2003. |
