| TYLER - Jay Hurst scored on a 3-yard quarterback keeper on Longview's second possession of overtime to lift the Lobos to a 35-28 come-from-behind victory over Tyler Lee Friday night before a crowd of 9,000 at Rose Stadium.
But it was the running of Sophomore tailback Fred Talley, who rambled for 228 yards on 19 carries and scored four touchdowns, plus converted a crucial two-point conversion, that enabled Longview to pull out the win. The Lobos improve to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in district, while Lee falls to 3-4, 0-2. Overtime was adopted last spring by the University Interscholastic League. This was the first overtime played this year in District 12-5A. Both teams alternate possessions starting at the opponents' 25-yard line. Talley scored on a 25-yard carry on Longview's first play of the overtime after Lee had won the toss, but elected to go on defense first. However, the Red Raiders responded with a six-play drive as quarterback Josh Gentry went over from the one-yard line. Lee then went on offense and reached the Lobos' three, but Longview's defense held, and Shane Hudnall's 25-yard field goal try was wide to the left. Longview then got its opportunity with Hurst calling his own number three times, including a fake to Tajuan Stoker and then driving to the right corner of the end zone from three yards, setting off a wild celebration on the east side of the field. It took a costly Lee turnover - its only miscue of the game - for Longview to even have an opportunity to force overtime. The Red Raiders, who were looking for the final knockout punch, had a first-and-goal at the Lobo 10-yard line. But, Joffrey Reynolds fumbled and Longview's Essick Shead recoverd at the six. The Lobos then mounted an 11-play, 94-yard drive with Tally going over for the final two yards. Erin Roerecke, who had earlier missed an extra point, kicked a knuckleball that found its way between the uprights for a 21-all tie. Hurst, who also had a career night through the air, was 4 of 5 for 53 yards, connecting twice with split end Steven Bradley. Hurst finished 14 of 26 for 152 yards, while Bradley hauled in eight catches for 100 yards. |
