KILLEEN - Eighth-ranked Longview used a big-play offense to score four touchdowns, but it also had to withstand a record passing onslaught by Killeen's Mark Humble to notch its second win here Friday night.
Humble, rated one of the top quarterbacks in the state, tested the Lobos pass defense no less than 55 times, hitting 20 for 254 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn't enough. Longview scored quick and early, suffered a lull, and regained the spark again in the third period to post a 32-20 triumph. It was the second win in as many weeks over a District 13-5A team. The Kangaroos, 1-1, fought back to gain a 14-14 knot in the third when Brandon Mosley reeled in a 40-yard strike from Humble, who was 18 of 24 for 199 yards and two touchdowns last week. Humble then teamed with Mosley for a two-point conversion for the 14-14 score with 8:44 left. After Longview's L.V. Fite had trouble holding onto the ball, suffering two fumbles early in the quarter and leading to the game-tying touchdown, Chris Butcher came in to replace Fite. Butcher went 52 yards on his fourth carry for a touchdown with 6:06 remaining in the third, and tight end Brad Pierce latched onto a Kelvin Miles 11-yard strike on the first play of the fourth quarter to widen the advantage to 28-14. A high snap on a Killeen punt attempt enabled the Lobos to pick up a safety with 10:27 left for a 30-14 lead. The 'Roos then drove 73 yards and Monte Horne went in from two yards out and a try for two failed when middle linebacker Kendrie Nichols intercepted an Humble pass and raced the length of the field for two points, making it 32-14 with just 4:06 left. It was Nichol's second interception and long return of the game. Humble, whose most single-game attempts in his two-year career was 30 against Waco last season, was not sacked until late in the game and he suffered two interceptions, one by Daydrion Taylor, who returned out of his own end zone 51 yards to thwart a Killeen scoring try. In a wild and woolly first half, Longview scored on its first two offensive snaps and had the ball just 2:43 in the first quarter and then clung to a 14-6 lead by halftime. While the Lobos were scoring on runs of four - following a 48-yard interception return - and 54 yards for the ultra-quick lead, the Kangaroos oddly enough had drives of 15 plays and 12 plays without scoring. Killeen's first-half score came on a 13-yard Humble-to-Derrick Knotts pass on the ensuing play after a bobbled Longview snap on a fourth-down punt. The touchdown came with 3:22 left in the second stanza. Longview, on the other hand, scored just 2:21 into the game when Fite stepped in untouched from the four after Nichols picked off his first interception and brought it back 48 yards. It was the Lobos' first offensive play of the game. Then, only 1:16 later, Taylor, in at wingback, took a handoff from quarterback Cory Hutchings on a reverse play and sped 54 yards untouched. Darren Danielson added the second of what would be four PATs for a 14-0 lead with 8:23 still remaining in the opening quarter Longiew never had the ball for more than six plays in succession the rest of the half and in fact, trailed in total yardage, 156-99, at the intermission and 327-223 for the game. |
