| LONGVIEW - Black cats, broken mirrors or whatever superstitious charms Trimble Tech might have attempted to call up against Longview, Friday the 13th continued to be like any other visit to Lobo Stadium, unlucky.
Trimble Tech played follow the bouncing football as the Lobos converted five turnovers into touchdowns in a 41-14 victory. The victory evened Longview's season record at 1-1. The Bulldogs of District 7-5A remained winless at 0-2. The Lobos were paced in the first half by an unlikely statistic, coming in the form of a pass attack. Quarterback Jason Dodson was a perfect 6-for-6 to start the contest, throwing for 92 yards and three touchdowns. "We just came out after last week's loss (27-7 to Killeen) ready to play," Dodson said. "We worked real hard in practice. "Their secondary messed up a lot and we took that to our advantage. It was a dream come true," the lefty added. Through the air, Longview gained 132 yards. Total, the Lobos mustered 319 - 197 coming in the first half while scoring 41 unanswered points to take a 41-6 halftime lead. Longview played the second half with mostly reserves off the bench. "I think our football team improved," said Longview head coach Robert Bero. "They came out ready to play. They're capable of being a good football team. "I said before the game, number one, we needed to become more consistent on offense. That was about as well as we're capable of playing." A pair of Bulldog fumbles and an interception staked Longview to a quick 21-0 lead in the first quarter. The Lobos opened the contest with a 12-play, 47-yard old fashioned grind-it-out on the ground series, capped off by an Andre Davis' two-yard burst up the middle with 5:21 showing. Bobby Taylor's 31-yard return on the opening kickoff set the Lobos up in Bulldog territory. Trimble Tech only ran one play following the ensuing kickoff as Darrell Brice recovered Andre Wilson's first of two fumbles at the 17-yard line. On the first play, Dodson connected with split end John Washington for six more points at the 5:06 mark. Brian Payne then kicked the first of three extra points. The Bulldogs continued to struggle offensively as Longview's defense stopped them twice for no gain on their second series. Facing a third-and-10, quarterback Gerald Massey went eight yards to split end Cedric Risher, who fumbled and Kevin Bradley recovered for the Lobos. Four plays later from the Bulldog 20, Dodson rolled right and found backup split end Brent Goerner in the corner of the end zone for a 20-0 lead. Taylor put the Lobos back into scoring position with an interception of a Massey pass, returning it 26 yards to Trimble Tech's 38. With 44 seconds elapsed in the second quarter, Dodson went 27 yards, this time to tight end Michael Brooks for the score. "He was definitely in the groove," Bero said of Dodson. "The son-of-a-gun threw like he could have done it all night." Davis, who finished with 82 yards on 14 carries, tallied the Lobos final two touchdowns on runs of one and eight yards. Trimble Tech scored its first points with no time remaining in the first half. |
