| LONGVIEW - A non-operating clock in the first half and a full moon might have been enough superstition for Longview in the first half of Friday night's game with Dallas South Oak Cliff.
Whatever the reason, the Lobos awoke with a resounding second-half performance, scoring 44 points to claim a 54-8 decision over the Golden Bears at Lobo Stadium. The win closes out the non-district schedule as Longview prepares to open 12-5A play next week by hosting Lufkin. Ranked No. 3 in Class 5A, the Lobos complete a perfect 5-0 mark in pre-district action. South Oak Cliff's Golden Bears fall to 1-4. Longview's 54 points are the most scored by a Lobo football team since Longview posted 51 against Pemberton - 51-6 - in 1969. The Lobos were able to capitalize on the scoreboard by continually frustrating both SOC's punters. Longview blocked one punt, partially blocked another, and twice forced the Golden Bears to misconnect on three others. South Oak Cliff suffered a minus 37 yards in fumbled snaps. The golden Bears might be seeing Longview's No. 24 in their dreams. Bobby Taylor literally had a hand in each of SOC's punting misfortunes. Garnering his third block of the season, he also added an interception to his credit. After scoring only 10 points in the first two minutes with an inoperative clock, Longview exploded for 28 in the third quarter, equaling its single-quarter high scoring output for the season. Backup tailback Marques Ingram scored twice in the quarter on runs of 46 and 5 yards, his second coming after a fumbled South Oak Cliff punt. Ingram rushed for 61 yards on only five carries. Andre Davis scored on a 5-yard run and Jason Dodson completed a 17-yard pass to Todd Dauper for a touchdown. The Golden Bears avoided the goose egg to start the final quarter when Darnell Majors scored on a 16-yard run and quarterback Anthony Grady successfully converted a 2-point conversion. But South Oak Cliff already trailed 38-8 at that point. Kevin Madden came in to replace Dodson at quarterback in the fourth quarter to complete an 8-yard pass to John Washington for a touchdown and then ran two yards for another. Dean Malone finished out the scoring with a 25-yard field goal, his second of the game. Averaging 30 or more points over the past three weeks, the Lobo offense had n off night to start the game against SOC. Longview struggled to an unaccustomed 78 yards total in boring a 10-0 halftime lead. Taylor's blocked punt in the second quarter lead to the only touchdown as the Lobos took over possession deep in Golden Bear territory at the 25. But it would take the full four downs before Davis took a pitch from Dodson and sprinted around the right side for 17 yards and the touchdown. Davis got a key block from guard Michael Watson to clear out the defense. Longview's longest drive of the half concluded in a 29-yard field goal by Malone. The Lobos moved from their own 29, after South Oak Cliff turned it over on downs, in nine plays. A 23-yard run by Randy Floyd nearly led to six points, but SOC defense back Sheddric Fields saved the touchdown with a collar-high tackle. Twice, the Golden Bears advanced into Longview's end of the field, but to no avail. South Oak Cliff appeared to have a first-and-goal at the Longview five, but fullback Harry Christle fumbled and Derrick Head recovered. |
