| LONGVIEW - If Trimble Tech and Eastern Hills are indeed the best football teams Fort Worth has to offer, then Paschal, Southwest, Western Hills and other District 6-AAAAA schools should be counting its blessing that they don't have to play Longview.
The Lobos, which trounced Eastern Hills 38-14 a week ago, made it two in a row with an impressive 35-14 victory over the district-favorite Bulldogs. And like last week, the game wasn't as close as the score indicated. It seemed the only time Longview's offense, which rushed for 364 yards, could be stopped was when it stopped itself. And it appeared the major factor leading to Tech's scores were simply the Lobos defense was bored. "We just got ahead and relaxed a little bit," was the explanation of Carlton Drain, who played a superb game at defensive end. Longview started the rout when it took the opening kickoff and methodically marched toward the Tech goal line. A 13-yard reverse to Alvernon Jones and a 13-yard keeper by Eric Harris were the key plays in the drive to move the Lobos into Bulldogs territory. Harris then hit wingback Charles Smith with a 25-yard strike to the 20, and one play later the duo teamed up again on a 14-yard touchdown strike. The PAT was bobbled for a 6-0 lead with 6:15 showing in the opening period.
The Lobos struck quickly for their next score.
Tech took over on its own 13 after stopping Smith two yards short of a first on a fourth-and-20 call. But the Bulldogs were forced to punt from their own 16 and again Boyd blocked Dawson's kick. This time the ball bounced into the end zone and Boyd fell on it for a touchdown. Jason Baird added the PAT for a 19-0 lead.
Willie Starts had his second interception of the season late in eh half and Baird took advantage with a 31-yard field goal as time ran out for a 22-0 lead at intermission.
Tech scored in the second half on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Ricky Gates to Kevin Evans and on a 23-yard touchdown run by Ervin Farris.
But each time Tech tallied, Longview countered with quick scoring drives. The first ended with Harris following Powell's excellent block for a 14-yard touchdown and later Joe Johnson, who rushed for 185 yards, broke loose for a 59-yard jaunt to end the scoring.
Longview travels to face Abilene next Friday night. |
