| LONGVIEW - With a multi-talented offense, Doug Cox can call on several positions to provide the firepower. Friday night it was that wingback, namely Nathan Harris and Terry Morrow.
Harris latched on to four passes for 144 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Morris carried two wingback recoveries 53 yards, one for a score, as Longview posted an impressive 35-19 triumph over Fort Worth Paschal in a non-district encounter. It was the second win in as many games for the Lobos and avenged last year's 30-23 defeat at the hands of the Panthers. Harris used one-handed catches, leaping catches and uncontested catches - two from quarterback Kyle Jones - and his speed to turn the game into more or less a rout. The Lobos scored three times in the second period to take a 22-7 halftime lead and the first two times they had possession of the ball in the second half for a commanding 35-13 advantage. Harris' spectacular scoring catches came in the second quarter, a 40-yard strike, and in the third quarter, a 60-yard haul from Jones, who threw only three times but was credited with 100 aerial yards, thanks to Harris' heroics. Longview piled up 397 total yards, 253 on the ground. The Lobos lighted the scoreboard first, with 11:37 remaining in the second period, when quarterback Zane Butter, the "other" half of the Lobos' signal-calling corps, took the ball in from 5 yards out. He capped an eight-play, 65-yard drive and Jon Rosborough tacked on the first of his three points after kicks. Although Paschal, now 1-1, came back on the ensuing possession to knot the game at 7-7, when David Brooks burst in from the 1-yard line, the Lobos were hardly fazed. Jones came on to direct the next drive, a 73-yard march, climaxing it with the 40-yarder to Harris for a 14-7 nod with 2:34 left in the half. Defensive end Darrell Writt, on a third-and-17 situation, sacked Paschal quarterback Artis Ramsey for a 9-yard loss, forcing a punt. Just three plays later the Lobos were on the board again, on Morrow's 31-yard untouched scamper around the right end with 42 seconds left. Clifford Ward scored a two-point conversion behind the blocking of running mate Gahlen Johnson and Longview took a comfortable 22-7 lead into the dressing rooms at the intermission. Another defensive gem, this time by tackle Terry Graham on a third-and-15 play, put Longview in business when Ramsey was tugged down at his own 40-yarder marker. A 29-yard punt put the Lobos at their own 31. Ward lugged the pigskin 9 yards to the 40 and Jones then found Harris far down the field. Although Mark Patterson was able to get a hand on the ball, Harris patiently waited for the tip and raced in ahead of Shawn Beasley for the tally and a 29-7 margin with 7:32 left in the third quarter. The Panthers fought back for an 11-play, 71-yard move and narrowed the gap to 29-13 when Ramsey connected with Sam Lorimer for a score at the 1:15 mark in the third. It was then, however, that the Lobos showed some of their offensively versatility. Backup tailback Ronnie Hunter carried 12 times in a 15-play march, including the last nine times in succession as Longview methodically drove 81 yards to run out 8:40 of the clock for a 35-13 lead with 5:31 still left in the game. Hunter, who wound up as the game's leading rusher with 82 yards on 14 carries, teamed with Ward for 147 ground yardage in the Lobos' depth-laden crew. |
