KILLEEN - Benton Goodnight missed both an extra point and a 46-yard field goal attempt within the last 52 seconds of the game to enable Longview to pull out a 13-13 tie with first dash time rival Killeen here Friday night.
Goodnight's conversion attempt after Killeen fullback George Leiato scored from two yards out with 52 seconds left was off to the left. Goodnight was given a chance to redeem himself 47 seconds later, when on the last play of the game, he got a shot at a 46-yard field goal with a stiff wind at his back. The kick was 10 yards to the left and was far short. Goodnight was given a chance at the winning field goal when Longview passed on a fourth and nine situation from its own 34 yard-line with 34 seconds remaining in the game. The pass fell incomplete and Killeen took over on downs. It was the first meeting ever between the two clubs, and Killeen dominated the first half and Longview took charge in the second. Longview coach Doug Cox had said before the game that the kicking phase was Longview's weakest link. He turned out to be correct. Killeen's tying touchdown was set up when a 16-yard dash punt slithered off the side of LHS punter Kevin Jones' foot and traveled only 16 yards to the Lobo 30 with 4:24 remaining in the contest. The tie painted a 121-yard effort by Lobo tailback Sammy Lanier. Quarterback Victor McGee picked up 78 yards in ten tries. Trailing 7-0, Longview took the second half kickoff and marched 70-yards in 11 plays to knot the score at 7-7. Lanier and McGee carried the ball for all but four yards of the drive, with Lanier getting the final yard over left tackle. Chuck Tomberlain added the extra point. After the two teams exchanged punts, Longview took the ball at its' own 43 and marched 57 yards in twelve plays to go up 13-7. McGee got the final two yards on a keeper around right end. Tomberlain's extra point attempt was wide to the left. Longview out gained the Kangaroos, 152-36 in the final half. All of the offense in the second half came on the ground from both clubs. Killeen jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when 9.4 speedster Gerald McNeil stepped in front of the McGee pass on the third play of the game and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown. Goodnight booted the extra point and Killeen had the early lead with only 1:37 gone in the contest. Jones kept Killeen pinned at it's own end of the field in the first quarter when he booted a punt out of bounds on the six inch line with 5:45 left in the initial stanza. Killeen managed one first down but John Walker had to punt and got off only a 17-yarder that carried to the Kangaroo 37. Longview was unable to take advantage of the opportunity, however, and turned the ball over on downs. Longview and Killeen are both now 2-0-1 and Longview will have an open date before beginning district 14-AAAA play in two weeks with Nacogdoches. |
