LONGVIEW - Longview High School opened the football season on the home lot yesterday by defeating the Troup team by a score of 20 to 0. The game was not up to the standard that the local team set in the game played at Tyler. During the first few minutes of play Sutton, Longview's star fullback, was injured and remained out of the game during the rest of the first half, but went back in the game during the second half, but was handicapped on his line bucks by his injury. Lawrence for Longview played a star game making at least as many tackles as any other two men made. Jones, after calling for a pass, made an end run for 30 yards. Sutton, after catching a pass from Jones ran through the Troup backs for a touchdown.
Heineman kicked two goals after and made one long run that made the second touchdown possible. White, as usual, made large gains around end and off tackle.
The game follows:
Troup received and failed to gain and kicked to Jones who fumbled and Troup recovered. Quarter up. Troup gained on passes and an end run through Meredith for first down but again punted to Longview. Longview failed to gain and punted to Troup, who began a passing game. Heineman intercepted a pass and went twenty yards carrying the ball to the 10-yard line, where after a series of plays, Jones carried the ball over for a touchdown. Heineman failed to kick goal. During the third quarter, Longview failed to gain and the ball was kept in the middle of the field. During the fourth quarter, Jones carried the ball on a long end run to the 20-yard line. Meredith making the play possible by cutting down a Troup back. Penalties and poor work lost the touchdown. Troup desperately trying to score by passing and Sutton recovered a pass from Troup. A long pass to Sutton carried the ball over. Heineman kicked goal. Only a small crowd of outside supporters were present, a crowd being made up principally of high schools students and teachers. It is costing the local management quite a sum to bring good teams here and Longview citizens will have to support the games better or it will be necessary to play most of the games away from home, where expenses can be made. By actual count there were only sixty 50 cents tickets punched at the gate which means that there were only sixty town people at the game. We should have several hundred at each game outside the school children. Make arrangements to attend the next game even if it is necessary to make some sacrifices as the team needs encouragement. The local management is trying to arrange a game here next Friday with the Centenary Academy Football team of Shreveport. |
