HOUSTON - Tailback Leo McCoy scored two touchdowns while picking up 166 yards on 25 carries to lead Longview to a 14-13 victory over Conroe here Saturday afternoon in a Class AAAA regional battle.
The victory propels the Lobos into next week's quarter-finals against Dallas Carter. McCoy capped a 66-yard drive in the first period when he bolted over from eight yards out. Mark Bolton kicked his first of two extra points and Longview led, 7-0, with 2:56 remaining. Then a minute later, McCoy scored from the 2-yard line to highlight a 43-yard drive and Longview owned a 14-0 first period lead. But Conroe came back in the second quarter. After driving to the Longview 2-yard line, Lynn Hereford fumbled, but teammate Randy Placy fell on the loose pigskin in the end zone for a touchdown. The kick was good and Conroe trailed, 14-7, at intermission. Conroe scored its last touchdown with 9:29 left in the game when Alvin Cartwright dashed across from 11 yards out. This time, however, the kick failed, and Longview staved off Conroe for the victory. Conroe's Cartwright was spectacular in defeat, picking up 142 yard as the losers grounded out 308 yards. |
