LONGVIEW - It doesn't pay to riddle the Longview Lobos, Marshall learned here Friday night.
The visiting Mavericks took advantage of a Lobo fumble early in the game and scored on the ensuing snap from scrimmage and held a 7-0 lead slightly three minutes into the game. Longview fumbled again, on its next possession, but the "Mean Green" defense held fast. That's when the "Green Machine" took over and sustained a brilliant 69-yard drive in just seven plays to tie the game and eventually post a 28-15 District 14-AAAA win over the Macs. It is the ninth straight win of the season for the No. 2 ranked Lobos. Marshall's last touchdown in the fourth and final period came on a deflected pass out of two people's hands and into tight end David Hawkins. It was rather meaningless, however, as the Lobos had built up a "safe" 28-7 lead by then. The Mavs' first score put Longview behind for the first time this season and the 15 points was the first time the Lobos had allowed a team to get into double figures. Leo McCoy scored three times for Longview on two and five yards run and a 12 yard pass from quarterback David Gibson. McCoy also added a two-point conversion. Llewellyn Fambles also scored on a one-yard run after McCoy seated an opening. Mark Bolton added two point after kicks for the evening. Marshall, now 5-3 on the season and 1-3 in league action, moved the ball on the "Mean Green" better than anyone all season, accounting for 254 yards of offense. Longview, however, had 296 with 134 of it coming through the airways. Quarterback Fambles, Tm Martin and David Gibson completed eight of 11 passes, although suffering two interceptions. McCoy also rushed for 75 yards against a tough Mav defense. The Mavericks' Donald Washington was the game's leading rusher gathering 94 yards on the ground. He also had Marshall's first touchdown, scrambling 47 yards after the Longview fumble in the first quarter. Longview will experience an open date next week before traveling to Lufkin on Nov. 14 in a game that will likely decide the league champion. Marshall will get a shot at Lufkin next week. |
