TYLER - Overcoming a bit of first half trickery here Friday night, Longview's number two rated Lobos used a key punt return and pass interception by Johnny Fuller for a 21-0 district 14-AAAA victory over the Tyler Lee Red Raiders.
Lee attempted a guard-around, a fake punt and an end-around pass, but all in vain as the Lobos posted their fourth shutout in six games this season. It was the second league win for Longview and the second loss for the Raiders in as many games for both. Longview took the opening kickoff and drove 69 yards in 14 plays for the initial score of the game. Tailback Leo McCoy, who carried eight times in the march and five straight at the end, tallied from five yards out. Henry Williams added the point-after for a quick 14-0 lead with 2:09 still left in the first quarter. Fuller, midway through the fourth quarter, added a little spark to a somewhat lackluster performance with a 23-yard return of a Mike Loftis pass to the Lee nine yard line. Two plays later, Sherman Johnson bulled in from three yards out for the score. Mark Bolton this time kicked the conversion for the 21-0 lead. Following the Lobo's second touchdown of the evening,t he Red Raiders were credited with a 38-yard gain when guard Gary Garrison stopped back, picked up the football and streaked round to the Lobo 29. The drive stalled, however, and ended when blocked Lamont Martin took the punt snap but was stopped short on a fourth-and-five situation. Longview appeared to be moving in for yet another touchdown, but a 15-yard holding penalty nullified a sweep by McCoy that carried to the Lee nine on a fourth-and-two play. The penalty moved the ball back to the 44 where Jeff Stone punted the ball away. Still looking for a salutation to break the Lobo's "Mean Green" defense, Loftis pitched back to Kevin Townsend on an apparent end-around play. Townsend, however, heaved the ball far downfield to received Howard Winston for a 42-yard pass play, only to have it called back as Lee was flagged for having an ineligible receiver downfield. Longview, now 6-0, must face John Tyler in Longview next week for what shapes up as the most important game to date. |
