LONGVIEW - The Texarkana Tigers, top-rated eleven in state Class AAA circles, ran into unexpected oppositon from Longview for the greater part of three quarters Friday ight before breaking loose for a pair of touchdowns in the final period to defeat the stubborn Lobos, 27 to 7.
The victory enabled Texarkana to keep its District 4-AAA lead with five victories and no defeats and set the stage for a showdown battle next week between the Tigers and Kilgore for the district championship. Longview broke into the score column halfway through the first quarter after Danny Woodard, tackle for the Lobos, blocked Bobby Bledsoe's punt on the Texarkana 16. Four plays later Quarterback George Myers plowed over from the 1-yard line for Longview's touchdown and then kicked the extra point. Texarkana scored its first touchdown with fifty-seven seconds left in the half on a 65-yard pass from Quarterback James Moffatt to end Carter Williams. The Tigers scored again with nineteen seconds remaining in the third quarter when Jack Foster plunged over from the 1-yard line. Texarkana tallied twice in the final period when Bill Gresham went over from the 1-yard line and again when linebacker George Lineberger return an intercepted pass 15 yards to pay dirt. |
