| MARSHALL - Longview's Lobos blew their final opportunity to climb out of the District 11-AA cellar when they dropped a 6-0 ball game here to Gahlen Dinkle and the Marshall Mavericks.
The game, which was played before a raincoat and umbrella crowd of 1,500 fans, was slowed considerably by a muddy gridiron which forced both teams to play straight, power football. The Lobos vaunted aerial circus, featuring Johnny Linney as the man of the flying trapeze, failed to materialize. It was learned shortly before the game time that Linney would not see service due to a badly bruised thumb, the result of an injury sustained against Tyler. Without Linney, the Lobos had to resort to a running game and it is no secret that the Green Wave is a mere ripple on the ground. The contest climbed a three-year personal duel between the Lobos' brilliant Fox Cashell and Marshall's all-state bound Dinkle. Gallopin' Gahlen over showed the Gallant Fox (this is beginning to sound like the Kentucky Derby), bt only slightly. Both boys turned in sensational individual performances and livened up an otherwise dull ball game. Playing behind a mediocre line, Dinkle made his own breaks. The veteran Maverick halfback personally engineered an 82-yard third period drive which netted the game's sole touchdown. Dinkle highlighted the advance with a 14-yard scoring run off tackle. Cashell's bull-like off-tackle slants and end sweeps accounted for most of the yardage compiled by the Green and White. The 165-pounder is still a definite and there is little doubt among the scribes that "the Dink" has earned himself an all-state berth. |
