LONGVIEW - The Mineola High School Yellowjackets might have been outweighed and outclasses by the Longview High School Lobos in Lobo Stadium Friday night, but they certainly were not outfought, according to the reports brought back by fans who attended the game.
As far as scoring was concerned the fast, heavy Lobos smothered the Jackets under an avalanche of touchdowns. But it was a different team that took the field against the Class AA aggregation than opened the season against Winnsboro here a week ago. The orange and white lads put out all they had against the Lobos knowing all the time they were hopelessly outclassed. They fought hard and against teams of their own class would have been unbeatable. Against the second and third strings the Yellowjackets could have scored, but when it appeared imminent the Longview first string took the field and halted every drive. The Jackets lone score came in the final minutes of the game and they have the honor of being the first to score on the Lobos this season. Longview's first team was on the field at the time. The Jackets had carried the ball to the 10-yard line on a pass. At that point the team lined up in formation to kick. Cocky Longview players wanted to know if the Jackets thought they had made a touchdown and a few seconds later the found out. With Sherman Hughes holding, Babe Godwin buried his toe in the pigskin and the forward wall held Longview from blocking the kick. The local lads outsmarted their opponents and marred their records. Two touchdowns were by Longview in the first period, four in the second period and two in the third. Outstanding play of the entire melee was a 68-yard scoring run by Blakeley. Next Friday night the Jackets play the Mount Pleasant Tigers there. |
