| LONGVIEW - The Longview Lobos, licked by a fast and heavy Port Arthur club here Friday night, will tackle Athens' Hornets in their initial conference game of the 1942 season Friday night here. The game is schedule for 8 p.m.
The South Texans pushed the Lobos around considerably throughout the first half but a tenacious defense that held on and on kept the Jackets away from the Lobo goal until the end of the second quarter. A 16 yard pass from Arnaud to Babin was the payoff pitch. Early in the third period, the Jackets blocks two punts in a row and the second gave them the touchdown that clinched the victory. The first occurred out about the Lobo 35 but even so, the Wolves held off a Jacket thrust and took over on downs on the one. But the succeeding punt also was blocked, this time by the whole right side of the white-clad Jacket line, and Sam Formagus covered it in the end zone for the touchdown and added the extra point. The Wolves' passing put them in the ball game in the fourth but it was too little too late. After an 80-yard runback of an intercepted pass by Bob Crowley which was nullified by a Lobo offside penalty, the Wolves got into gear and connected for their touchdown. J.T. Jeffress flipped one to Crowley deep behind the left halfback and Crowley sprinted over for the score. The play was good for 74 yards. That was all the scoring. A Lobo drive in the closing minutes ended in a pass interception deep in enemy territory. Longview's main deficiency was adequate offensive blocking. The line held the Jacket forwards well and the secondary performed well except against a few long aerials. Ken Abney's defensive play was a masterful and Crowley at one point made one of the slickest full speed tackles to nail Arnaud on a sweep that local fans have seen in years. But the blocking was below par, and the Lobos were taxed accordingly. |
