MARSHALL - The Longview Lobos settled the championship of District 11-AA here Friday and handed the crown to their arch rivals, the Tyler Lions, through the simple expedient of outclassing a game Marshall Maverick eleven, 23 to 0.
Tyler is the only undefeated team in the circuit and even a loss to Marshall, whom the Lions play next week, would have no effect on their title as Marshall's loss Friday was its second in conference play. Until facing the Lobos, Marshall was the only remaining club in the district with a chance at the championship as Tyler eliminated Kilgore, another contender, 27 to 0, Thursday. Longview's first score came on two passes, the first from Lonnie Clark to Willis Hearne for 20 and then from Joe Adams to Charles Freudiger, for 20 and the score. Charles Johnson kicked goal. The second score was in the second quarter and Clark went over from the 5 to climax a fifty-yard drive on which ground plays were used exclusively. Johnson again kicked goal. The next score was a safety, handed the Lobos in the fourth when Richard Nutt tried a forward pass in his end zone and the ball was grounded. Shortly after, Clark lateraled to J.T. Jeffress on the 8 for the final score. Johnson booted point. |
