LONGVIEW - The Longview Lobos downed their second conference eleven Friday night when they outlasted the Texarkana (Texas) Tigers 27 to 12, in one of the fastest games played in Lobo Stadium this year.
The Tigers drew first blood in the opening quarter when Harmon, husky Texarkana halfback, skirted right end for the marker. The two clubs battled on even terms for the remainders of the first half. The Lobos came back in the second period to even the count. Big Don Fambrough went off left tackle ro 15 yards and then converted to put the Lobos in the lead, 7 to 6, at the halfway mark. In the third quarter the Lobos ground game began to click and, with the fine blocking of Scott, Murray and Bovines, the Lobos' Fambrough lost little time in registering two touchdowns. His first score came on an 11-yard jag run and his second came from the one after he and Jones, alternating behind beautiful blocking, had carried it there from midfield. The Tigers threatened seriously after a bad pass from center that put the ball in scoring position on the Lobo 9. On the second play, Harmon struck one on the peg for Peterson for the Tigers' last score. Archie Jones replaced Scott for the Lobos in the third period and showed the Tigers his ability to follow the line with fine interference when he slid off right end for 49 yards, placing the ball in scoring position. Bivins scored the final touchdown on an 11-yard reserve over the Tiger right guard. Fambrough converted for the final 27-12 score. After being a bit battle-scarred following their fracas with the Texas High Tigers, the unbeaten and untied Lobos will move onto foreign soil for the first time this year next Friday night as they meet Coach H.B. Hale's Kilgore Bulldogs in Kilgore. The Bulldogs last week dusted off Marshall 39-6 with a power show and loomed as a major test of the Lobos' strength. Coach Hale has most of his 1939 club back - the one that smacks last year's Lobos down 6 to 0. |
