LONGVIEW - Winners over Athens' Hornets by 39 to 0 in their first conference struggle, the Longview Lobos this week will barge into the tough Texarkana Tigers, who Friday night kicked the highly touted Kilgore Bulldogs around considerably before the 'Dogs rallied in the final minutes to gain a 7-7 tie.
The Tigers, always a rough aggregation against the Wolves, will play here Friday night at 8 o'clock in another of the locals "for keeps" games. The Lobos had an easy time with the Hornets Friday night, scoring two touchdowns in each of the first, second and fourth periods. However, if Red Shaw, Hornet quarterback, had been given the support he should have had from his pass receivers, the Hornets would have scored. He hung em on pegs all night but his receivers butter fingers let dozens of perfect heaves slip through. One time in the late stages Pugh, giant Hornet end, wriggled free in the end zone and Shaw's port sided flip was squarely on the button - but it fell harmlessly into the end zone for a touchback. Longview drove 63 yards for the first score, with T.A. Scott going over on a 22-yard jaunt as a climax. Then Fambrough carried it over on a reverse from the one for the second after a clipping penalty put the ball on the Hornet one. The Wolves took a punt on their own nine in the second and started another scoring drive. Fambrough carrying it across again on a beautiful 65-yard gallop. A short kick by Shaw went out on the Athen 48 late in the first half and the Wolves got to rolling again. A 33-yard forward-lateral Scott to Griffith to Fambrough counted. The fifth score came in the fourth period, aided by a 34-yard penalty against Athens for unnecessary roughness. B. Smith carried it over from the three. He also made the final counter after Goodson intercepted another Shaw pass on the 20, Smith scoring from the six. |
