LONGVIEW - Longview scored two first half touchdowns, the second coming after a 52-yard power drive, to whip the Athens Hornets here Friday night, 19 to 7, in Longview's first conference game.
T.A. Scott, Longview halfback, scored the first touchdown midway through the opening heat on a revenge from Edgar Worsham, going 7 yards off tackle for the counter. Carter's kick was wide. The Hornets took over in the second period when Reese intercepted a Worsham pass on the Lobo 28 and returned it to the Wolves' 22. Red Shaw, Athens' whole ball club, then shot a pass to Robertson on the 12 and a pass interference penalty gave the Hornets the oval on the 8. Shaw cracked center for the touchdown on the third try and Carroll converted for a 7-to-6 Athens lead. Longview took the succeeding kickoff on their 22 and marched 78 yards to a score without interruption, Worsham finally cracking left tackle for the score. Worsham passed to Richardson to convert the extra point. The final Lobo score came in the fourth. Carroll's punt went to the Hornet 47 and, after an onside penalty, the Lobos scored in three plays. Bivins gained 22 off right tackle, Skidmore went 8 more off right tackle and Sapp circle left end for 22 and a touchdown. That ended the scoring. Shaw's passing was the feature of the game but the power drives of the Lobos were too much for the Hornets. Lobo line plays netted 249 yards to Athens' 26. Longview's Lobos with their first conference scale tied to their belt, look toward the north this week for their game in Texarkana against the Texas Tigers Friday night. It will be their second conference encounter this season. At the same time the Lobos were winning, the highly-regarded Tigers were being bounced around a bit in Kilgore by Coach Hale's Bulldogs, who won a wild 26-20 battle. |
