PORT ARTHUR - The Longview Lobos, thoroughly chastened by an 18-2 lacing in Port Arthur Friday night at the hands of Tom Dennis' bulky Yellow Jackets, will get down to some serious work here tomorrow in preparation for their last practice game of the year - that with the Highland Park Highlanders, coached by former Southern Methodist great, Redman Hume.
The Scottie game will be the last before they seal into their conference schedule next weekend. Coaches Shotwell, Oshburn and Blackburn likely will do quite a bit of work this week on showing the boys some blocking, the elects of which the Wolves apparently forgot Friday night in Port Arthur. They did well enough in their own downfield blocking but when it came to moving the beefy Jacket line out of the way they failed miserably. Defensively, the Wolves looked great against the charges of the sizable Jacket backs' attacks; and in the opinion of this write, the Lobos had a one-touchdown better ball club than the Jackets fielded. Four things cost them dearly: 1) they lacked the drive the battling Jacket backs showed, 2) they continually slipped and fell in open fields, 3) they didn't block, and 4) they quit thinking after the ball game was four minutes old. The first touchdown was inexcusable. A pass, Worsham to Cantrell, from inside Longview's 20 yard line, worked for 20 yards; so they tried another. It was good for six points for Port Arthur when Bartlett hauled it down and ran 50 yards for a touchdown. They completely disregarded the danger of passing in their own end of the field, particularly when they were not trailing. Another interception set up the next Jackets score. Whitmire caught it on the Lobo 12, the passer standing in his own end zone, or there about, and passing straight down the middle. The hustling Lobo line gave the Jackets a battle but eight plays later, Certa scored. The last touchdown was also a gift when a wild flat pass was speared by Bulls, who "lit a shuck" for the corner flag and made it easily. He took the ball on his 34. Both the last touchdowns were made in the final period. Longview's tally came in the third period when Eliseo Banda, Lobo center, crashed through to block a Jacket punt, which rolled out of the end zone for a safety. The Lobos should have learned much from the game. The one factor that beat them, if any single factor did so, was their lack of blocking - the one thing that Shotwell coached teams have always shown a mess of. Even rabid pro-Jacket press box denizens gave them an edge over the winners, or at least an even shake; but the Wolves took too many chances early in the game, shirked their shores - and got a sound thrashing. |
