BRUINS CRUSH LOBOS IN FORM REVERSAL, 26 TO 6
LONGVIEW - Playing as though a state championship instead of a runner-up place in the district were at stake, the stepped-up Gladewater Bears brought the Longview Lobos' 1938 football season to an inglorious curtain here yesterday when they came from behind with a fast finish to throttle the Wolves 26 to 6 while 3,500 fans looked on. It was the final game of the year for both teams.

A first quarter touchdown by the Lobos, effected on a seven-yard pass from Sapp to Miller after a short Bear kick and after half a dozen fumbles, made the Wolves look like sure winners. But when Jake Hanna's boys got to rolling in the last half it was "Katie, bar the door."

Only a few moments before the first half ended the Bruins capped a 35-yard drive, which started on Lee's recovery of Worsham's fumble, with a seven-yard jaunt through Longview's left tackle for a touchdown. Lee carried it over standing up and, although the fans didn't realize it then, that was just a sample of what was coming.

With the halftime count tied at 6-6, the Bears started their work in the third period.

They hammered away at the Lobo goal line and saw the ball go over on downs after Daniels had dropped a pass in the end zone. However, the boys' fingers got slippery then and on an exchanged of fumbles Longview took the ball again on the fourth. A Lobo punt was blocked then and Jones recovered on the seven. In two plays Lee scored from the four and Jones converted.

The penultimate payoff came in the fourth period when the Bears staged an unbroken, 91-yard march that saw Lee, Wood and Jones share ball carrying shores in the an-engulfing sweep to the goal. Lee carried it over on a 13-yard drive straight over the middle. Jones converted and the Bears led, 20-6.

Then, as if adding insult to injury, the Bears completed the down-fall of the once-mighty Wolves with a final score in the last minutes. Lee returned a punt to his own 34 and Jones broke off around Longview's right end for 55 yards. Jones carried it over on the fourth play for the last points.

Lee and Jones were the fair-haired boys that spelled doom and destruction for Longview yesterday. Lee was a dervish and Jones was like a tractor in low gear. Riza, Gladewater's great guard, played his best game of the year. In the fourth period he broke up two straight Lobo forward passes by the simple procedure of batting them down before they got started. And he made half of his team's tackles.

Bill Knox at end and Don Fambrough in the backfield were the shining lights of a fair-to-middling Wolf Pack. Knox played a fine defensive game and Fambrough sparked the locals' running attack.

Hardy Miller's kicking continued up to the standard that has easily won for him the honors of the district's finest kicker.
