LONGVIEW - The Longview high school aerial bombers put on the heat against Kilgore Thanksgiving Day with the result that the Lobos clinched second place in the district 10 standings by running up the score for the second time this season.
The game was the last of the season for the Lobos. The victory put the cap on a highly successful season, winning seven games, losing two and tying one. The locals suffered one conference defeat, a 19-7 loss at the hands of the champion Tyler Lions, and one to an outside completion, the Masonic Home eleven who won the Fort Worth district. The alleged weak spot of the Lobo defense - pass defense - was the strong link Thursday as three of the Lobos eight touchdown came from pass interceptions. Four other markers were made via the pass route. A 59-yard jaunt by Wikinson accounted for the other score. In the first quarter, Skipper passed 30 yards to Whatley, who stepped over the goal line for the touchdown. In the second quarter, Skipper passed to Wilkinson 20 yards for one counter, Wilkinson broke off tackle and raced down the field for 59 yards, and Skipper passed to Whatley over the goal line for another. In the third quarter, Black intercepted a Kilgore pass and raced for 30 yards and the fifth tally. In the fourth stanza, Henry Matthews intercepted a pass from Horn and ran 80 yards, receiving excellent blocking and interference; Skipper again passed to Whatley over the goal line, 20 yards, for a score and later himself intercepted a pass and ran 40 yards to within 5 yards of the goal. Skipper then plunged over for the touchdown. The Bulldogs bombard the air with pass after pass in a desperate attempt to score. Many of their passes were completed but a larger number were futile. None were for long distances. Taylor and Horn tossed for Kilgore Coward and Wetzel receiving. Skipper passed, punt and ran with his usually effectiveness. Many of the Lobo reserve showed up well in battle. By virtue of their 28-0 win over Marshall, Tyler's Lions annexed the district 10 championship and earned the right to represent this area in a bi-district championship game with the Greenville Lions on Saturday next week. The game will be played at Tyler as interscholastic league rules give the team visiting last preference and Tyler played in Greenville in 1933 when they lost 20 to 0. |
