LOBOS WIN 10TH IN A ROW OVER MARSHALL
LONGVIEW - For the second week in a row, the Longview Lobos found themselves facing an early deficit against a longtime rival.

For the second week in a row, it didn't matter.

The Lobos scored 17 points in the span of 2:13 in the second quarter, erasing a 7-0 deficit and earning a 20-7 win over the Marshall Mavericks on Friday at Lobo Stadium.

Longview won its homecoming contest, defeated Marshall for the 10th straight season and made a winner of longtime assistant coach Oscar Wilson - who was serving as interim head coach while head coach and athletic director recovers from a medical procedure.

"I was proud of the boys. We made some mistakes, but we'll clean those up," said Wilson, who has been at Longview for 47 years.

The Lobos made some plays in the passing game, but when yards were needed, Longview turned to a rushing attack that used five players to grind out 122 yards on 40 carries. That led to a huge edge in time of possession for the Lobos, who improved to 2-0 on the young season.

A week ago, the Lobos trailed Lufkin 14-0 in the first quarter, but rebounded for a convincing win.

"We always have some plays scripted to see what they are doing on defense, and then we make adjustments," Wilson said. "I've been here 47 years, and were a power football team so when it was time, we went back to basics."

The win gives the Lobos a 68-42-5 advantage in the series.

Lobo quarterback Johnny Hamilton completed 12 of 21 passes for 122 yards and rushed for 21 yards on five carries. Mason Washington rushed for 40 yards and scored both Lobo touchdowns - giving him four rushing scores in two games - and Jaden Hurndon had four catches for 35 yards to lead the receiving corps.

The Longview defense allowed 127 total yards, with 45 coming on one play early in the contest that set up Marshall's only touchdown.

Krystin Williams and Bradley Williams recovered fumbles for the Lobos. Jessier Hampton-Williams forced a fumble and recorded a sack, and Chaztin Wrighten and Lawson Tubb also came up with sacks.

"We know what the defense can do," Wilson said. "They always step up. Coach (John) Berry makes the adjustments on the sideline, and the kids just step up and do the job."

Marshall QB Alton Henderson, coming off a 235-yard rushing game a week ago, finished with 59 yards on 16 carries while completing 4 of 9 passes for 45 yards and a touchdown.

The Mavericks forced a turnover on downs on Longview's first possession, and on the first play from scrimmage Henderson broke loose on a 45-yard run that moved the ball all the way to the Lobo 4-yard line. Three plays later, Henderson connected with tight end Russell Crawford for a touchdown and Jesus Grimaldo booted the PAT to put Marshall on top 7-0 with 6:43 left in the opening quarter.

Longview's next two possessions resulted in a punt and a fumble, but the offense finally began to clock and things turned bad in a hurry for Marshall.

The Lobos marched 70 yards in 12 plays and ate 5:29 off the game clock to tie the game. Hamilton hit Kyson Cummings for 21 yards on first down, and ten of the next 11 plays were runs, ending with a 3-yard TD smash by Washington at the 3:22 mark. Felipe Ayala's PAT tied it at 7-7, but the Lobos were just getting started.

Williams pounced on a fumble on Marshall's next play, and after a 15-yard pass from Hamilton to Cummings moved the ball to the 1-yard line, Washington scored again to put Longview ahead 14-7 after Ayala's PAT.

The Mavericks coughed the ball up on the first play of the next drive, with Hampton-Williams forcing the fumble and Williams recovering on the Marshall 17. The Lobos had to settle for a 35-yard field goal by Ayala, but the scoring outburst gave Longview a 17-7 halftime cushion.

Marshall had just three possessions in the second half, turning it over on downs twice and punting it away on the other drive after Tubb sacked Henderson deep in the Mavs' own territory.

Ayala put the final nail in the coffin with a 30-yard field goal with 4:30 left to make the final 20-7.

The Lobos will visit South Oak Cliff next week. Marshall will host Tyler Legacy.
