DRAGONS BOOT FIELD GOAL TO EDGE LOBOS, 20-17
WACO - Longview battled Southlake Carroll throughout Saturday's UIL 6A Division II state semifinal at SMU's Gerald J. Ford Stadium, but came up short after a running into the kicker penalty set up the Dragons' eventual game-winning field goal attempt and 20-17 win.

The Lobos suffered their first loss since Sept. 20, and finished the year with a 12-3 mark.

The Dragons, meanwhile, improved their 2024 season record to 15-0, and advanced to play Austin Vandegrift or Summer Creek in the 3 p.m. UIL 6A Division II state championship game at Arlington's AT&T Stadium on Dec. 21.

"I'm sick to my stomach for them," Longview athletic director and head football coach John King said of his players after the team's heartbreaking defeat. "How much they've put into this, what they've meant to this program, and everything they've done for us throughout the year. Wish we could've had a different outcome and been playing next week."

Longview jumped ahead early in the game after Kason Brooks intercepted a pass from Southlake Carroll quarterback Angelo Renda at the seven-minute mark of the first quarter.

The Lobos made the most of the turnover when they traveled 64 yards on quarterback Johnny Hamilton's completion to receiver Da'Morrion Williams, and eventually took a 3-0 lead during Alexandre Mitchell's 29-yard field goal attempt at the 3:42 mark of the period.

Southlake Carroll bounced back during its next drive to take a 7-3 lead on Christian Glenn's 35-yard touchdown run and Gavin Strange's PAT with 10 ticks remaining in the first quarter.

Glenn finished the game with 17 carries for 128 rushing yards and one score.

The Dragons tacked on Strange's 40-yard field goal attempt during another possession to make it a 10-3 advantage at the 5:57 mark of the second quarter.

Longview responded with Hamilton's fourth-and-goal line touchdown run and Mitchell's game-tying extra point attempt to even the score 10-10 with 54 seconds remaining in the first half.

Southlake Carroll quickly cruised in the second half when Renda found Blake Gunter on a deep 63-yard touchdown pass to set up a 17-10 lead at the 8:31 mark of the third quarter.

Renda ultimately completed 13 of his 21 pass attempts for 172 yards and one score and two interceptions.

Longview then turned to reliable running back Kelvin Washington. His nine-yard touchdown carry helped set up a tied 17-17 game at the 3:49 mark of the period.

Washington led Longview with 30 carries for 153 rushing yards and one score.

The Lobos had opportunities to take a second lead in the game, but they fell short during those occasions. That included Hamilton's interception to Southlake Carroll's Ethan Fisher on the Dragons' side of the field at the 11:08 mark of the fourth quarter.

Southlake Carroll flipped the field late, and set up Strange's potential game-winning 41-yard field goal attempt before he kicked the ball right of the target with no time remaining on the clock.

Longview looked to have the necessary stop to force overtime, but its defense was called for a late running into the kicker penalty. The Lobos' mistake gave Strange second life, and he nailed his second attempt from 36 yards out to send his team to the state title game.

Hamilton completed 6 of his 15 pass attempts for 139 yards and threw one interception in Longview's loss.
