LOBOS CLOSE WITH 30-0 SHUTOUT OF ROYSE CITY
ROYSE CITY - Longview had to wait for two lightning delays to end before it could start and finish Friday night's District 10-6A finale against Royse City at Royse City ISD Stadium, and made the most of the game when it was on the field to earn a dominant 30-0 road win.

The Lobos improved their 2024 season record to 8-2 and district record to 6-0, and will serve as the District 10-6A Division II one-seed when it hosts District 9-6A Division II two-seed Naaman Forest during next Friday's bi-district playoff home game at Lobo Stadium. Coach John King said the kickoff time was still being determined after his program's latest victory.

The eliminated Bulldogs, meanwhile, finished the year with a 2-8 season mark and 0-5 district mark.

"We knew there was going to be a chance of weather," said Longview athletic director and head football coach John King. "We had to handle a little adversity. I thought the kids did a good job with it."

Longview and Royse City were scheduled to start their regular season finale during the seven o'clock hour on Friday, but they had to wait for the first round of lighting to pass.

The teams eventually hit the field at 8:09 p.m., and the Longview defense followed with a forced Royse City three-and-out on the opening drive of the game.

Longview's offensive unit then handed the ball to Kelvin Washington during its first play of the outing to produce his 46-yard touchdown run and take a 7-0 lead at the 8:29 mark of the first quarter.

Royse City returned to the field, but the Lobos continued to keep them in check because they pressured the Bulldogs enough to force a punt miscue, and Isaiah Horton jumped on the ball for a fumble recovery and touchdown in the end zone to grow the gap to 14-0 at the 7:02 mark of the period.

The teams played until the 8:56 mark of the second quarter, but they were sent off the field again for a near-hour lightning delay. On the first play back, Washington stormed down the field again for an 86-yard touchdown run and a 20-0 lead before Alexandre Mitchell's extra point attempt was blocked by the Royse City defense at the 8:37 mark of the period.

Washington led Longview to victory with seven carries for 185 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Longview continued to excel because Washington's 36-yard run set up Javarion Pereira's one-yard touchdown run.

Mitchell quickly redeemed himself with a successful extra point attempt to make it a 27-0 score at the 3:06 mark of the quarter.

He also added a successful 20-yard field goal attempt as time expired in the first half to grow Longview's lead to 30-0 before an abbreviated halftime period.

Longview quarterback Maverick Rowe didn't connect with a receiver on his two first half pass attempts, and backup Johnny Hamilton completed three of his 14 second half passes for 52 yards.

Peyton Peoples completed five of his nine passes for 21 yards in Royse City's loss.
