ROCKWALL - Longview traveled to Rockwall's Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium for Friday night's District 10-6A road game against Rockwall-Heath, and leaned on a go-ahead fourth quarter defensive score to pull out a hard-fought 20-15 win.
The Lobos improved their 2024 season record and district record to 6-2 and 4-0 respectively before they host fellow district championship contender North Forney during next Friday's 7:30 p.m. league matchup at Lobo Stadium. The Hawks, meanwhile, dropped their season and league marks to 3-5 and 1-3 respectively. They will return to Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium for next Friday's 7:30 p.m. crosstown showdown with rival Rockwall. "We weren't looking to next week," said Longview athletic director and head football coach John King. "We were trying to win tonight. Our defense had one heck of an effort, and had the game-winning score. We got some things to clean up on both sides of the ball, but it's a win. We get out of here and be happy being 4-0 in district." Longview turned to Kelvin Washington early to produce some first half scoring and take an early lead. Maverick Rowe first connected with Washington on his 10-yard touchdown pass to give the Lobos a 7-0 advantage at the 6:47 mark of the first quarter. Rowe eventually completed six of his 13 pass attempts for 74 yards, one touchdown, and one interception during the outing. He completed two passes to Da'Morrion Williams for seven yards. Rockwall-Heath responded with Bronson Mueller's 41-yard field goal attempt with 15 seconds remaining in the period to cut Longview's lead to 7-3. Washington continued to strike for Longview because his two-yard touchdown run grew the Lobos' advantage to 14-3 with seven minutes to play in the second quarter. He eventually finished the night with 18 carries for 131 rushing yards and one score on the ground. Rockwall-Heath didn't fold when it faced the double-digit deficit. Prosper Neal scrambled from 20 yards out to cut the gap to 14-9 with 4:29 to play in the period, but he couldn't complete a two-point conversion pass attempt to Shawn Gary to move closer before halftime. The Hawks eventually took the lead on Longview's early second half miscue. Washington was stopped for a fumble and a loss of a yard and Colton Laughery picked up and returned the loose football 84 yards for the go-ahead touchdown to give the home team a 15-14 advantage at the 8:08 mark of the third quarter. The score remained that because Neal was once again unsuccessful on a two-point pass. This time the attempt was towards Christian Contreras. Longview needed a second half spark. Kason Brooks stepped up when he picked up the ball after Rockwall-Heath's Ashton Bradford's fumble and returned it 92 yards for a touchdown to give the Lobos an important 20-15 lead with 3:20 to play in the fourth and final quarter. Neal completed 22 of his 36 pass attempts for 196 yards and one interception, and carried the ball 12 times for 68 rushing yards and one score in Rockwall-Heath's loss. |
