LONGVIEW - Longview hosted familiar foe Tyler Legacy in an East Texas edition of a 2024 District 10-6A football matchup, and eventually pulled away for a 38-15 win in the 65th series meeting.
The Lobos improved their 2024 season record to 5-2 and district record to 3-0 before they travel for the 7:30 p.m. road league contest against Rockwall-Heath at Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium on Oct. 25. They also earned their 20th consecutive series win against Tyler Legacy since the streak began on Halloween night 2003 to grow their series advantage to 49-14-2 since 1960. The Red Raiders, meanwhile, dropped their year and league marks to 3-5 and 2-2 respectively before they host Rockwall at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium during the same time next week. They are still looking for their first series win against Longview since Oct. 10, 2003. "Our defense played well," Longview athletic director and head football coach John King said of his team's performance. "We [also] did a good job running the ball." Both teams were slow out of the gate, but Longview started to find its footing when defensive back Bryan Peoples intercepted an early red zone pass from Tyler Legacy quarterback Zachary Davis in the end zone at the 9:11 mark of the first quarter. The Lobos didn't score off the forced turnover due to Alexandre Mitchell's unsuccessful 37-yard field goal attempt at the 5:11 mark of the opening period, but they put him in another position to kick a go-ahead field goal. Kelvin Washington's runs of 58 and 10 yards and Maverick Rowe's 18-yard scramble on another team drive set up Mitchell's bounce-back 27-yard field goal attempt to make it a 3-0 score with 7.6 seconds remaining in the opening period. The Lobos then took advantage of great field position because Rowe connected with Da'Morrion Williams on a 16-yard touchdown pass and Mitchell tacked on a successful extra point attempt to grow the home team's advantage to 10-0 with 1:41 remaining in the first half. Longview quickly grew its lead to 17-0 in the opening minutes of the second half because Rowe's 46-yard strike to Jaden Hurndon occurred at the 10:24 mark of the third quarter. Tyler Legacy finally contributed to the game's scoring and cut Longview's lead to 17-7 when Davis connected with JP Rainer on a nine-yard touchdown pass at the 6:13 mark of the period. But, Longview turned to Kelvin Washington in the fourth and final quarter to finish off the victory. Kelvin Washington scored from four yards and eight yards out on touchdown runs between the 11:53 and 8:24 marks of the period, and was on the receiving end of Rowe's 19-yard touchdown pass at 5:48 to grow the team's advantage to 38-7. Washington finished with 22 carries for 177 rushing yards, and Rowe completed nine of his 12 pass attempts for 165 yards. Tyler Legacy answered with Jace Love's nine-yard touchdown run and Ethan Brown's two-point conversion pass to Rainer to cut Longview's lead to 38-15 with 2:38 remaining in the game. Davis finished 12-of-25 for 189 yards in Tyler Legacy's loss. |
