FORNEY - Longview had to bounce back from two first half deficits when it faced Forney at City Bank Stadium on Friday night, and eventually pulled away for a comfortable 41-14 District 10-6A road win.
The Lobos earned a series victory against Forney for the third straight season, and improved their 2024 season record to 4-2 and district record to 2-0. They will return to Lobo Stadium for the 65th meeting with East Texas neighbor Tyler Legacy during next Friday's 7:30 p.m. home game. The Jackrabbits, meanwhile, dropped their year and district marks to 3-4 and 1-2 respectively before they travel for next Friday's 7:30 p.m. league matchup with Rockwall at Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium. "It was a good night for everyone," Longview athletic director and head football coach John King said of his team's performance on Friday. "It didn't start off pretty. We made some mistakes early on. You can't do that against good people. We settled down and played well." Forney jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Nelson Peterson connected with Imari Jehiel on a quick 84-yard touchdown pass at the 10:46 mark of the first quarter. Longview leaned on Kelvin Washington for the second straight week. His 66-yard touchdown run tied Forney 7-7 at the 7:34 mark of the period. Washington eventually finished with 15 carries for 265 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. The Jackrabbits went to work again on their second drive because Peterson found Javian Osborne on a 19-yard touchdown pass to take a 14-7 lead at the 6:38 mark of the quarter. Washington continued to provide Lobo answers and plays because his 21-yard touchdown run made it a 14-14 score at the 4:03 mark of the opening period. Longview's defense finally prevented a Forney score on the Jackrabbits' third drive of the game. The Lobo offense took advantage of the stop when Maverick Rowe traveled 26 yards on a quarterback keeper to give the road team a 21-14 lead at the 4:47 mark of the second quarter. The Lobos' special teams unit then stepped up when K'Emion Dobbins blocked Vincent Hart's Forney punt and Jessier Hampton-Williams returned the ball nine yards for a touchdown. That gave their team an expanded 28-14 advantage with 2:12 remaining in the first half. Longview then opened the second half with more scoring. It grew its lead to 34-14 during Washington's 42-yard touchdown run at the 5:51 mark of the third quarter, but the score stayed there when Alexandre Mitchell missed an extra point attempt. Washington continued to spark Longview because his 65-yard touchdown run and Mitchell's successful extra point attempt grew the Lobos' lead to 41-14 at the 3:16 mark of the third period. Rowe completed six of his nine pass attempts for 105 passing yards in Longview's win. He completed two passes to Jaden Hurndon for 25 yards, and found Washington once for 11 yards. Peterson, meanwhile, finished with a 12-for-23 passing stat line for 236 passing yards and two passing touchdowns in Forney's loss. |
