LONGVIEW - Longview overcame an early first half battle with Rockwall during Friday's District 10-6A opener, and leaned on Kelvin Washington's eight-touchdown performance to snap its two-game season losing streak, and earn a satisfying 63-34 home win at Lobo Stadium.
Washington carried the ball 24 times for 377 rushing yards for six rushing touchdowns, and recorded two receptions for 109 yards and two scores. The eight total touchdowns and six rushing touchdowns are both school records. Washington also became the first Lobo to have multiple 90-yard plus runs in the same game, and Longview's win snapped Rockwall's 17-game district winning streak. "We get accustomed to what Boosie does," said Longview athletic director and head football coach John King. "It was a great night. He wants to win, and he's as tough as nails. It was one of those nights that we were able to get him loose." Rockwall challenged Longview early because Brent Rickert's 79-yard touchdown strike to Triston Gooch set up a 6-0 road team lead, but the score remained that at the 8:48 mark of the first quarter because Daniel Estrada kicked the extra point attempt left of the goal post. Longview quickly responded because Washington carried the ball 95 yards during an impressive touchdown run and Alexandre Mitchell tacked on the go-ahead extra point kick to give the Lobos a 7-6 advantage 23 seconds later at the 8:25 mark. Washington then grew the gap to 14-6 during his eight-yard touchdown run at the 1:30 mark of the opening period. Rickert turned to his passing game again to find Camron Marsh on a 49-yard touchdown through the air, and added a successful two-point throw to Gooch to tie Longview 14-14 at the 11:39 mark of the second quarter. But, Longview turned on the gas the rest of the way. Washington then scored on the ground from 26 and 32 yards between the 7:41 and 5:46 marks, and was the recipient of Maverick Rowe's 44-yard touchdown throw to give the home team a 35-14 advantage at the 48.5-second mark of the period. The Lobos' defense also slowed down Rockwall's offense late in the first half because Jailynn Taylor picked off a Rickert pass with 14.5 ticks until halftime. Rockwall returned to form and tightened the gap in the early portion of the second half. The Yellowjackets benefitted from Rickert's seven-yard touchdown pass to Jett Lamb and Estrada's successful extra point kick, and cut Longview's lead to 35-21 at the 7:42 mark of the third quarter. Longview then made it a 42-21 score during Washington's 27-yard touchdown run at the 5:36 mark of the period. Rockwall moved within 42-34 by the 11:47 mark of the fourth quarter after Rickert's one-yard touchdown pass to Gooch, another successful Estrada extra point attempt, and Rickert's 31-yard touchdown pass to Marsh. But, Rickert's two-point conversion pass attempt resulted in an incompletion. Longview then put the game out of reach when Rowe found Washington on a 65-yard touchdown pass, Washington scored on a 91-yard touchdown run, and Kason Brooks returned Gooch's pick six. Rowe completed four of his seven passes in Longview's win, and finished with 112 passing yards and two touchdowns. Rickert finished 38-of-55 for 409 yards alongside his five touchdowns in Rockwall's loss. The Lobos move to 3-2 overall. Rockwall drops to 3-3 and 1-1. Longview will visit Forney next Friday. |
