LONGVIEW - Longview found early success during Friday's 2024 home opener at Lobo Stadium, but the effort wasn't enough as South Oak Cliff stormed back to grab a come-from-behind 45-44 win.
The Lobos dropped their 2024 season record to 2-1, and will look to bounce back during next Friday's 7:30 p.m. game against Ruston (Louisiana) at Lobo Stadium. The Golden Bears, meanwhile, improved their year mark to 1-2, and will look to build on that when they face Dallas Spruce during next Friday's 7:30 p.m. game at Dallas' John Kincaide Stadium. Longview quickly jumped ahead 14-0 in the first quarter after Maverick Rowe connected with Donavon Denmark on a 23-yard touchdown pass at the 9:37 mark, and added a 27-yard scoring throw to Kelvin Washington at the 7:40 mark. South Oak Cliff stormed back with Mikail Trotter's five-yard touchdown run at the 2:53 mark of the opening period and Reggie McNeal's following 24-yard touchdown carry with 23 seconds remaining in the frame to match Longview 14-14. Washington then took over the game to swing the momentum back in Longview's favor. He returned the following kickoff 86 yards for a go-ahead touchdown to give the Lobos a 21-14 lead with 10.3 ticks remaining in the quarter. Then, he added an eight-yard touchdown run at the 6:14 mark of the second period. But, the score remained 27-14 when Alexandre Mitchell's extra point attempt bounced off the right upright. South Oak Cliff then moved into Longview territory in the final minute of the opening half, and Ceasar Olvera drilled a successful 36-yard field goal attempt to cut the Lobos' advantage to 27-17 with 13 ticks remaining until halftime. The Golden Bears continued to excel after the mid-game break because Carter Kopecky connected with Levon Morton on an 18-yard touchdown pass to trail 27-24 at the 7:09 mark of the third quarter. Washington immediately answered with an explosive 72-yard touchdown run to give Longview a 34-24 lead at the 6:50 mark of the period. He finished the outing with nine carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns, caught two passes for 42 yards and a score, and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown. South Oak Cliff followed with Damond Williams' 51-yard touchdown run to cut Longview's lead to 34-31 at the 5:25 timestamp of the frame. Rowe then found Da'Morrion Williams on a 47-yard strike to take a 41-31 lead at the 3:07 mark of the quarter. But, Kopecky closed out the high-scoring third period with a 73-yard touchdown run to move South Oak Cliff within 41-38 at the 2:52 mark. Longview held the ball when the fourth quarter began, but it only managed Mitchell's 23-yard field goal attempt to extend its advantage to 44-38 at the 9:53 mark of the period. South Oak Cliff answered one final time during Kopecky's 31-yard touchdown pass to Nate Coleman to take its only lead at 45-44 with 7:16 remaining in the game. Kopecky finished his outing with 279 passing yards, 92 rushing yards, two passing touchdowns, and one rushing score. |
