MARSHALL - Longview faced an early challenge from Marshall during the rivalry's 114th football meeting at Maverick Stadium on Friday night, but it eventually bounced back and pulled away for a dominant 42-7 road win.
The Lobos improved their 2024 season record to 2-0, and will head to Lobo Stadium for next Friday's 7:30 p.m. home opener against South Oak Cliff. They also improved to 67-42-5 against Marshall since 1909. The Mavericks, meanwhile, dropped their year mark to 1-1 before their 7:30 p.m. non-district road test at Palestine next Friday. "It was a great team win,"" Longview athletic director and head football coach John King said of his program's performance on Friday. "I was concerned with how Marshall played last week, and the players that they have on both sides of the ball. Our kids were up for the challenge. They made plays in all three phases. We had to come and earn it." Longview struggled to move the ball in the first quarter for the second straight week, and also fumbled the ball twice in the first half in this Friday's outing. Marshall took advantage of its archrival's mistakes, and eventually leaned on Semaj Gatson's two-yard touchdown run to take an early 7-0 lead with 11 minutes to play in the second quarter. The Lobos finally found their footing because Kelvin Washington scored on the ground from two yards out to even the score 7-7 at the 4:15 mark of the second quarter. Washington eventually carried the ball 18 times for 99 yards and two scores in the game. Longview's defense then produced a crucial Marshall stop, and its offensive unit marched down the field in time for Maverick Rowe to connect with De'Je'Un Owens on a two-yard touchdown pass to give the Lobos a 14-7 lead with 37 ticks until halftime. The Lobos continued to dominate in the second half, and doubled up their scoring in the third quarter. Rowe turned his attention to Da'Morrion Williams on a 15-yard touchdown pass to give his team a 21-7 advantage with 8:57 to play in the period. Longview then returned to its running ways, and added Washington's three-yard touchdown carry to make it a 28-7 score at the 4:13 mark of the third quarter. The trend continued in the fourth quarter because Rowe broke free on a 22-yard scoring scramble to give Longview a 35-7 lead with 7:06 left in the final period. Rowe finished his night with a seven-for-seven passing performance for 89 yards and two touchdowns, and ran the ball six times for 61 yards and one score. When Longview's backups finally hit the field, sophomore quarterback Johnny "Tre" Hamilton completed a 63-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jace Peterson to finalize a 42-7 score with 2:37 to play in the outing. Marshall quarterback Alton Henderson struggled in the loss. He only completed three of his 11 pass attempts for 14 yards. Longview defensive players Brenden Reese and Mason Booker both intercepted a Henderson pass in the win. |
