LANCASTER - Longview hit the road for the first time in three weeks, and overcame a back-and-forth first half to earn Friday night's 52-35 District 7-5A Division I road win against Lancaster at Beverly D. Humphrey Tiger Stadium.
The Lobos now own a 4-1 season record and a 2-0 district record before the upcoming bye week and 7 p.m. road contest against Forney at City Bank Stadium on Oct. 6, while the Tigers will bring respective 1-4 and 0-2 marks to the 7 p.m. home outing against Tyler the same night. Lancaster quickly went to work because Kewan Lacy's six-yard touchdown run gave the Tigers an early 7-0 advantage at the 7:24 mark of the first quarter. Longview also leaned on its run game to find an answer, and eventually knotted up the score during Taylor Tatum's 19-yard touchdown run at the 6:11 mark of the opening period. Tatum led the Lobo charge with 24 carries for 250 yards and three rushing touchdowns, and added another score on a 25-yard reception. Lancaster continued to find success because Carter Jones connected with Lacy on a 41-yard touchdown pass to give the home team another advantage at 14-7 with 3:40 to play in the frame. Longview once again punched back because Javion Robertson picked off a Jones' pass during Lancaster's next possession, and returned the football 36 yards for the game-tying touchdown to make it a 14-14 score with 1:28 remaining in the quarter. Lancaster scratched and clawed all the way down the field, and Izayah Lee's two-yard touchdown run gave his team its final lead of the night at 21-14 at the 8:53 mark of the second period. Longview then erupted for 24 unanswered points to take its first score advantage of the night. The Lobos turned to Andrew Tutt to tie the game during his 32-yard touchdown run, and eventually jumped ahead 28-21 during his 25-yard touchdown connection to Tatum at the 1:46 mark. The Lobos' defensive unit then swarmed Jones, and forced his loss of nine on a critical third and 10 before kicker John Monsivais' 31-yard field goal attempt expanded the road team's lead to 31-21 with four seconds until halftime. The surge continued after the break because Tatum's 15-yard direct snap touchdown run made it a 38-21 game at the 10:10 mark of the third quarter. Lancaster finally ended its drought when Jones found Ti'Erick Martin on an eight-yard touchdown connection at the 3:23 moment of the period, but Tatum's 61-yard touchdown run and Kelvin Washington's 22-yard rushing score made it 52-28 with 9:05 remaining in the fourth. The Tigers then wrapped up the game scoring when Jerbrandin Henderson caught a late 81-yard touchdown pass from Jones. |
