LONGVIEW - Longview used a strong second quarter to overcome an early homecoming battle with Marshall on Friday, and set up its 48-11 win in the 112th edition of the longtime rivalry series.
The Lobos improved to 65-42-5 against the Mavericks, and 21-1 since 2001. They also improve to 2-0 in 2022, while the Mavs dropped to 1-1. "They're hard to prepare for," King said of Longview's opponent on Friday. "But, I was proud of our kids. [We] withstood the storm, and made the plays in the second quarter to get out to a commanding lead." The Lobos faced an early deficit on Friday because Marshall drove down the field and took a 3-0 advantage on Jesus Jaimes' 37-yard field goal at the 7:39 mark of the opening quarter. But, the home team responded with back-to-back scores to own a 10-3 lead at the end of the first period. It was launched by Taylor Tatum's two-yard touchdown run at the 4:45 mark of the frame, and continued with Michael Fields' successful 24-yard field goal at 1:55. Longview continued to heat up, and outscored the opposition 21-0 in the second quarter. Tatum started the surge when he found enough space to earn a 16-yard touchdown run. That gave his team a 17-3 lead at the 9:29 mark of the period. The Lobos then caught the Marshall return squad off guard with a successful pooch kick, and recovered the ball in Maverick territory. On the first play of their next drive, Jordan Allen found Dekaylen Reese on a 32-yard touchdown connection to make it a 24-3 Longview lead with 9:15 remaining in the first half. Allen continued to find his passing groove, and found Tatum on a 12-yard touchdown pass to grow the Lobos' advantage to 31-3 at the 5:31 mark of the quarter. He finished his 8-of-13 passing night with 142 yards. That wrapped up the first half scoring, but more exciting plays awaited the teams after the halftime break. Alijah Johnson continued the trend when he stormed to a 53-yard touchdown run that resulted in Longview's 38-3 lead at the 4:11 mark of the third quarter. Tatum finished the outing with 90 yards on 12 carries, while Johnson added 88 yards on seven runs. Marshall snapped Longview's 38-0 run when Semaj Gatson scored on the ground from two yards with 1:10 remaining in the period. The Mavs decided to roll the dice on a two-point conversion attempt, and ultimately cut the Lobo lead to 38-11 when Byrd Robinson completed a pass to Zachary Smith. But, Longview finished off its win with 10 straight points in the fourth and final period. Fields drilled his 38-yard field goal attempt at the 9:31 mark before Jonathan Lee produced a five-yard rushing touchdown with 1:39 left in the game. Longview now turns its attention to next Friday's 7 p.m. road game against Tyler Legacy at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium, while Marshall will prepare for that night's 7:30 p.m. home contest against Henderson at Maverick Stadium. |
