| TYLER - For the second-straight week, 24 minutes of football have dictated the Lobos' start to District 11-6A action.
On Friday night in Tyler, beneath the lights of the East Texas Fair at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium, it was the second-half that lifted the Lobos to a 2-0 start with a 56-35 win over Tyler Lee. After a wild first half, which included three scores in a 2:09-minute span, the Lobos hit the locker room clinging to a 35-28 lead over the Red Raiders, who fall to 0-2 in league play. "The circus was in town, not the fair," Longview head coach John King said. "It was crazy. Big plays. One team would make and play and the other would answer. It was one of those nights where everyone was making big plays and we made enough there in the second half there to hold. "Getting to 2-0 is huge, but it's not over. We're in better position than some but it's going to be like this every week." On the night, Lee (2-3) finished with a 548-to-525 total yard advantage over the Lobos. The bulk - 402 yards - came in the first half for the Red Raiders, who were limited to 146 yards over the final two frames with 60 coming on their lone second-half score. "Get lined up and communicate," King said of the message to the defense at halftime. "We made a few adjustments. Our biggest deal was not fitting in the scheme and too much of do-it-on-your-own stuff. It was a little bit of everything there in the first half." Longview (4-1) pounded out 398 yards on the ground and added 127 more through the air. Lee finished with 329 on the turf and 219 in the passing game. Gaylon Wiley finished 6-for-9 passing for 127 yards and three touchdowns for the Lobos, hitting Jaylin Brown for a 15-yard score, Eric Timberlake for a 43-yard score and D'Crayvan Polk on a 36-yard pass. Kendrevian White finished with 181 rushing yards and was held out of the end zone for the first time this season. Polk rounded out his three-touchdown night on runs of 29 and two yards and Wiley hit the trio for the night on aone-yard punch-in. Special teams had a huge factor in the contest with Ke'Undre Wilson blocking an extra point attempt and a field goal, which was housed on an 85-yard return from Kobe Davis. Junior backup quarterback A'Darius Carter returned a kickoff 74 yards to paydirt with both special teams scores coming in the final two minutes of the first half. Wilson rounded out his night with an interception for the Lobo defense, who held Lee to 32 total yards in the third quarter and 146 in the second half. For Tyler Lee, junior quarterback Chance Amie finished with four touchdowns on the night - two on the ground and two long scores through the air on completions of 74 and 60 yards. Donerick McCray finished with 81 rushing yards and LaDarius Wickware 81 for the Red Raiders. "I knew they were a good football team, I was sick all week long," King said. "I respect them and I just think a lot of people don't know how good they are. It's starts with Amie and their big offensive line. "They're a dangerous bunch." Longview's defense started with a quick three-and-out to start the contest. That was it defensively for both the rest of the first half. Longview ground out an 10-play opening drive with Wiley punching in the one-yard score, the first of six-straight possessions combined with touchdowns. Lee led, 14-13 after the first quarter with touchdown runs from Jordan Printers and Amie and a missed Lobo point-after attempt. Longview pulled ahead, 21-14, when Wiley hit Polk for 36 yards and the ensuing two-point attempt to Sophomore Jessie Anderson, who finished with 46 yards on three carries. Lee answered quickly, with Wilson blocking the PAT for a 21-20 Lobo lead with 7:54 left in the second quarter. After the first Lobo punt since the third quarter against Marshall, Lee's following drive stalled at the six, when Wilson flew around the edge for his second block. Davis then scooped it up and took it 85 yards to the house. It took one play to even it up again when Amie hit Isaiah Davison on a 74-yard flea flicker. Carter then navigated the field for a 74-yard kickoff return, sending the Lobos into halftime up 35-28. After a missed field goal to start the third quarter, the Lobos scored on consecutive possessions - the latter coming off Wilson's interception - to build a 49-28 lead on Wiley's toss to Timberlake late in the third quarter. Polk closed the Lobo scoring with he second score of the night early in the fourth. Longview hosts Rockwall (1-1) on Friday while Lee visits Mesquite Horn. |
