LONGVIEW - It wasn't the 20 or 30-yard runs from L'darrius Peterson that impressed Longview head coach John King on Friday night.
It was the short jaunts that propelled Longview at Lobo Stadium. Peterson finished with 179 yard of Longview's 342 rushing yards as the Lobos used a 28-point second quarter to knock off Mesquite Horn, 49-30, in a crucial District 12-5A showdown. "He's a tough running back and he got some tough yards," King said. "Some of his better runs weren't the 20-yarders, they were of the five and six yard variety. "He had some positive yards and ran through some people." The Lobos move to 6-1 on the year, 3-0 in district action. Peterson stepped up after starting running back JaMycal Hasty went out after his first touch of the contest - a 21-yard blast - and did not return after favoring his right ankle/foot. Quarterback Dezmond Chumley made the most of his completions, averaging 23.1 yards per completion with three touchdowns while adding a 37-yard score on the ground. Tight end Jordan Whitaker pulled down three catches for 52 yards including scoring hauls of 28 and 12 yards. Dorian Leonard caught two passes for 86 yards, 60 coming on Chumley's third touchdown pass. Defensively, Roderick Alexander had three sacks while Stephan Maxey blocked a punt and had a hand on another along with Omar French. Zaycoven Henderson scooped up the first blocked punt and trucked the ball 55 yards to the end zone. Kadarrius Dixon and Laurent Johnson had interceptions for the Lobos. "Felt like we controlled the line of scrimmage pretty good on both sides," King said. "We ran the ball well and should've run it more to be honest. I thought the offensive line played well and we ran a three-man front on defense a lot of the time and got good pressure with those three and were able to stuff the run. "The running game that they did have was not a result of the defensive line, Destri (White) had a lot to do with that." The three-year starter finished with three passing touchdowns and added one on the ground, finishing 21-for-36 for 268 yards and 39 on the ground for Mesquite Horn (6-2, 2-2). Hasty went out on the Lobos third snap from scrimmage as the first possession of the contest stalled. The Lobos struck first on its next possession, marching 49 yards on four plays with Chumley scoring from 37 yards out on a scramble with a pair of nice downfield blocks. White found Jarrison Stewart for a 22-yard touchdown pass and Taylor Lewis split the uprights from 24 out to give Horn a 10-7 lead after the first quarter. Longview scored the first 21 of a 42-point combined second quarter with Chumley finding Whitaker for 28 yards and Leonard for 60 on back-to-back drives. Marquies Hunter added a five-yard scoring jaunt to wrap 21 unanswered points for Longview. White scored on a three-yard run before Chumley and Whitaker connected for the second time from 12 yards out. White tossed his second first-half touchdownwith 56 seconds until the break as the Jaguars cut into Longview's lead, 35-24. Henderson's fumble recovery pushed the lead to 42-24 and Jeremy Powell's three-yard jaunt gave the Lobos the 49-30 final. Longview travels to Mesquite for a showdown with North Mesquite next Friday. |
