| MESQUITE - Longview's football team didn't have big running plays on Friday, but rushing yardage chunks at a time set up the Lobo passing game nicely.
This combination of rushing attempts and timely passing plays helped the Lobos rally for a 38-30 win over Mesquite Horn in a District 11-5A game at Hanby Stadium. Longview regrouped after a 21-yard Travis Tamez field goal gave Horn a 27-24 lead with 9:25 remaining in the third quarter. Longview took the lead back for good on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Bivins Caraway to Eric Hawkins with 2:46 left in the third quarter. This capped a 68-yard drive, in which eight of Longview's 10 plays were on the ground. On their next drive, the Lobos had 10 consecutive rushing attempts, which set up a six-yard touchdown pass from Caraway to Deontre Wilson with 8:37 remaining, capping a 56-yard drive to take a 38-27 lead. Horn made it a one-score game when Tamez made a 39-yard field goal with 4:17 remaining. Horn got the ball back with 2:25 remaining, but the victory hopes of the Jaguars ended when defensive end George Polk played back in pass coverage and broke up a pass from Destri White to Vincent Hobbs on a fourth-and-seven play at the Horn 39-yard line. Longview, ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press' Class 5A state poll, improves to 6-1, 2-0 in 11-5A. It is the third time in four games Longview has rallied from a deficit for victory. Horn, which lost to Longview twice last season (including the Class 5A Division II Region II final) and is 0-7 all-time against the Lobos, drops to 2-5, 1-1. "What we needed in the second half were first downs. I wanted to at least flip the field for field position," Longview head coach John King said. "Rallying to win has been typical for us this year." Most big plays Longview made were by the passing game. Eric Hawkins, a verbal commitment to the University of Arkansas, had four receptions for 149 yards and four touchdowns. Caraway was 9-for-16 for 208 yards and three touchdowns passing, adding a touchdown run to his docket. Three Longview players had at least 48 yards, but no more than the 52 yards by running back J'Haston Faggans. Wilson and tailback Tory White had 48 yards rushing each. White, rebounding from suffering a foot injury in the fourth quarter against Mesquite on a late hit last week, rushed for 46 yards in the second half. Horn struck quickly to open the second half and take its first lead. Horn needed just three plays to move 73 yards to open the half with Treyvon Marsh scoring on a 55-yard touchdown run with 11:24 left. A Wilson fumble from a wildcat formation was recovered by Horn linebacker Justin Kelly two plays later, setting up Tamez's go-ahead field goal. Horn was denied a touchdown when a pass from White to DeVante Harris was broken up by Longview Sophomore safety Stephan Maxey on a third-and-goal play from the Longview four-yard line. Harris had 190 total yards of offense while Harris, a two-way standout and a verbal commitment to the University of Oklahoma, had one catch for 14 yards. A pair of big special teams plays allowed each team to score a field goal on their respective opening drives. A 58-yard return by White on the opening kickoff set up a 22-yard field goal by Israel Madrid for the Lobos. Horn countered with a 51-yard kickoff return by Harris, setting up a 39-yard field goal by Tamez, who was 3-for-3 on field-goal attempts and also had four punts for a 45.0 yard average. Longview took a lead it would hold for the rest of the first half on a six-yard touchdown run by Caraway with 3:18 left in the first quarter, a play in which a Caraway move made a Horn defender miss. The touchdown was set up by a 62-yard pass from Caraway to Hawkins in which Hawkins beat double coverage. The most pivotal play in the first half happened with 11:07 left in the second quarter, when the Lobos forced Horn running back Justin Olyphant to fumble and Jalen Porter recovered for the Lobos at the Horn 35-yard line. This set up a one-yard touchdown run by White on a fourth-down play. Most of the rest of the half the teams went back and forth with scoring drives. Horn capped a 59-yard drive with a 21-yard touchdown run by Jay'lyn Lynch with 2:54 left in the first half. The Caraway to Hawkins connection struck again with 1:01 left in the first half as Hawkins broke free for a 55-yard touchdown reception. Horn struck back quick, needing just 46 seconds to move 66 yards. A 20-yard pass from White to Hobbs set up a one-yard touchdown run by Treyvon Marsh with 15 seconds remaining in the first half, cutting Longview's lead to 24-17 at halftime. Hobbs had seven receptions for 95 yards while Marsh led all players with 118 yards rushing on 13 carries. Caraway passed for 170 yards in the first half while had 95 yards passing. Horn linebacker Richard Jones had two first-half sacks. Linebacker DeMarkus Lathan led Longview with seven tackles, adding two of the six sacks made by the Lobos. Horn linebacker Nick Lovett led all players with 10 tackles. Longview hosts North Mesquite, starting at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at Lobo Stadium. It's Longview first home game since a 24-10 win over Lufkin on Sept. 16. |
